Creatore Earns National Field Hockey Honor

GILBERT, Ariz. — UNC junior Marissa Creatore has been honored as the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week as announced Wednesday by the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association). Creatore, a forward from Chapel Hill, was announced Tuesday as this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz is the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week.
Creatore earned conference and national honors for the first time in her career after playing key roles in both UNC wins last weekend. Friday at No. 12 Boston College, she scored to tie the game after the Tar Heels trailed early, then assisted on Catherine Hayden's game winner in the 25th minute of play. UNC went on to a 4-1 win and completed conference play with a 6-0 record, good for the ACC regular-season championship.
On Sunday against No. 5 Connecticut, the defending national champion, Creatore scored the gamewinner in the 48th minute as UNC won 2-1.
"Marissa is a great example of how hard work can pay off," North Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "She's improved so much since her freshman year, and she continues to work hard every day. She uses her speed and knowledge of the game to get herself in the right place to take advantage of opportunities. I'm so pleased to have her earn this recognition, representing our whole team and the success we've had, last weekend and throughout the fall. It's been a great season so far, but all of our goals are still ahead of us and Marissa helps set that tone."
A graduate of East Chapel Hill High School, Creatore has seven goals this season, fourth on the team. She has started all 15 games at forward and serves as the team's vice captain.
UNC (15-0) hosts No. 4 Duke Sunday in the Tar Heels' final regular-season home game. The nonconference matchup (the teams met in conference play last month) is set for 1 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium. Carolina will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game.
