Gerard Shoots Career-Low 65
Austin Hitt and Ryan Burnett are 7 under par, Ryan Gerard shot a career-best 65 and the University of North Carolina is in third place after two rounds Sunday at the Fighting Irish Classic.
The tournament is being played at the Warren Golf Course at the University of Notre Dame. Third and final round action is Monday.
Carolina shot 14-under-par 270 in the morning round and a 4 under 280 in the afternoon. The Tar Heels trail Illinois (270-268–538) by 12 strokes and Georgia Southern (266-267–543) by seven. Iowa State is fourth and Iowa stands in fifth place.
Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) and Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) both shot 68s in the first round, then followed those with matching 67s in the second. They are tied for sixth place in the individual standings at 7 under 135.
Burnett's 67 is the freshman's low round as a Tar Heel. Hitt has now shot seven rounds in the 60s in his first 11 rounds this year.
In the first round, Gerard (Raleigh) was even par on the front side, then made six birdies on the back to shoot 6 under 65. He birdied the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes. It was the low round of the season by a Tar Heel.
Gerard's 65 was one of four scores in the 60s by Carolina in the opening round, the first time the Tar Heels have accomplished that this season. In addition to his 65 and Burnett and Hitt's 68s, senior Preyer Fountain shot a season-best 69.
