Carolina Runs Over Carson-Newman, 115-74
November 1, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Stephanie Watts scored 28 points to lead North Carolina to an impressive 115-74 exhibition victory over Carson-Newman Thursday night from Carmichael Arena.
Watts, in her first game action with the Tar Heels since February 2017, led all scorers behind an 11-for-17 shooting line that included five three-pointers in the second half. She added six rebounds and six assists.
Janelle Bailey, Shayla Bennett and Naomi Van Nes each registered a double-double. Bailey had 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Bennett had 10 points and 11 assists in her unofficial UNC debut. Van Nes had 11 points and 11 rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench.
Paris Kea had 14 points, all coming in the first half, while Jaelynn Murray contributed 11 points and Taylor Koenen pulled down 12 boards.
With a more than comfortable lead coming out of halftime, Watts drilled four three-pointers in the first two minutes, 55 seconds of the third quarter to erase any doubt of who would come out on top.
UNC has won all 10 previous exhibition meetings against the Division II Lady Eagles, who are picked No. 3 in the Preseason Division II rankings. The Tar Heels have scored in triple digits in eight of the 10 matchups.
Haris Price paced the visitors with 18 points, while Mika Wester had 14. Both earned WBCA All-America honors as juniors last season.
Carolina scored eight unanswered points out of the first-quarter media timeout to gain a 19-8 advantage. All four buckets came on the fast break with the Tar Heels converting three steals into points in the run.
UNC continued to turn up its defensive pressure in the early going, pressing the Lady Eagles from end-to-end. The Tar Heels scored 11-straight points to make it a 19-2 run and led 30-14 heading to the second period.
Carolina continued its first-half onslaught with a 9-0 run in the second period that lifted the home team to a 59-30 lead at the half.
UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell is a 1974 graduate of Carson-Newman.
Carolina officially tips off the season next Tuesday at Elon at 7 p.m.
