November 5, 2018 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina visits Elon on Tuesday in the opening game of the 2018-19 campaign from the brand-new Schar Center on the campus of Elon University in Elon, N.C. The matchup pits UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell against her former student-athlete and current Phoenix head coach Charlotte Smith, who played at Carolina from 1992-95 and hit the game-winning shot in the 1994 NCAA National Championship game.
This is the third such meeting between Hatchell and Smith. The Tar Heels won 85-67 during the 2014-15 season in Myrtle Beach and earned a 78-73 victory in Chapel Hill during the 2016-17 campaign.Â
The Tar Heels begin a season on the road for the first time since 2000-01 at Buffalo on Nov. 17, 2000.
Carolina is 38-6 all-time in season-opening games, but has lost two of the last three years to begin a season.
