Balanced Tar Heel Attack Earns 3-1 Win over Miami

CHAPEL HILL – The Tar Heels' balanced attack and solid defense paved the way for a 3-1 Carolina victory over Miami on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. Four Tar Heels logged double-digit kills while three had double-digit digs to clinch their second consecutive win.

Skylar Wine led Carolina with her third double-double of the season (12Â kills, 11 digs). Destiny Cox, Ava Bell and Madison Laufenberg posted double-figure kills, helping Carolina to its 56 kill total. Defensively, Mia Fradenburg (20) and Casey Jacobs (13) in addition to Wine guarded the floor, collecting double-digit digs Carolina matched its season high of three solo blocks as Wine, Bell and Cox each picked up one. Hunter Atherton dished out 47 assists and three kills in the match.

Miami's Elizaveta Lukianova posted a match-best 16 kills while Chloe Brown added 10, but it was not enough for the win. Carolina (7-17, 3-12 ACC) out-hit Miami (13-10, 9-7 ACC), .243 to .105 for head coach Joe Sagula's 598th win at the helm of the Tar Heels.

Jacobs set the tone for the set with an ace out of the gate. The Tar Heels went on a 7-0 run to begin the match. However, Miami answered back with five points including a trio of aces to make it a two-point frame. The Tar Heels attacked at an impressive .400 clip, limiting the Hurricanes to a .034 rate with only three kills. UNC balanced its offense between Bell with four kills and Katharine Esterley and Laufenberg each with three. Despite a 4-0 run late in the set, Carolina clinched the 25-20 set one win on a Miami service error.

The Tar Heels and Hurricanes played an even second set with neither team taking more than a four point lead. The squads traded 3-0 runs throughout the frame. Carolina battled back to knot the set up at 20-20 as Esterley and Atherton jumped to stuff five Miami attacks before Cox clinched the tying point with a kill. However, Miami took the second set, 25-23, to even up the match at 1-1.

Miami brought it within one at the 21-20 mark. However, the Tar Heels closed out the set on a 3-0 run for the 25-21 set win and 3-1 match victory.

The Tar Heels travel to NC State Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Duke Saturday at 2 p.m. Carolina wraps up the 2018 season with Senior Day on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
