Career & Networking Trek A Continuing Success Story
November 15, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Over Fall Break a group of University of North Carolina men's and women's lacrosse student-athletes traveled to New York City for the second annual NYC Career and Networking Trek. Â
Â
The Tar Heels toured four different companies in various industries, hosted a lacrosse clinic in Harlem, attended the Capstone Networking Event and tackled a ToneHouse workout.Â
Â
Upon arrival on Thursday afternoon, the student-athletes headed to Bank of America, courtesy of Laura Zimmerman (UNC '12) and William Johnson ('91). The company visit was all-encompassing, as the group was introduced to a panel of mostly Tar Heels from different sectors within Bank of America, given the "typical day" rundown and toured various trading floors.Â
Â
Upon leaving Bank of America, the group hopped on the subway and headed to Harlem to host a lacrosse clinic. The Harlem lacrosse clinics are always everyone's favorite part of the trip. Spending an hour at practice is never enough, but is does remind the student-athletes of the amazing opportunities the sport of lacrosse of lacrosse has provided them.
Â
After the Harlem clinic, the student-athletes headed to the Capstone Networking event. The event was hosted by Wells Fargo in its beautiful connections center. The event allowed the prominent alumni and friends of the lacrosse programs to connect with recent graduates and our current student-athletes. The event was highlighted by hearing from head coaches Jenny Levy and Joe Breschi and athletic director Bubba Cunningham.Â
Â
After the event ended at 9:30 PM, it was off to bed, as the student-athletes were preparing for their 5:30 AM wake up call.
Â
Waking before sunrise, the student-athletes packed into cabs and headed down to to ToneHosue, what has been deemed the hardest workout in New York City. The grueling workout included bear crawls, sprints, rowing and ropes. After crushing conditioning day, the student-athletes hit the streets for three more company tours.Â
Â
The day started at Marwood Group, which was founded by men's alum Johnny Moore. Hosted by Mr. Moore and fellow alum Jon Fox, the group learned about healthcare insurance and life lessons for taking the next steps professionally.Â
Â
After Marwood, the group headed to Oath, an innovative media company that hosted a panel discussion demonstrating the company's wide portfolio of careers. Lastly the student- athletes headed to Google. Google included a tour of its New York campus, learning about its work-life balance, approach to the hiring process and a delicious lunch.
Â
Overall, it was an amazing trip that allowed the student-athletes to explore different career paths and make connections with alumni and friends of the program that will extend well after the student-athletes' four years come to an end.Â
Â
Both head coaches Jenny Levy and Joe Breschi understand the benefits of providing their student-athletes with real-life experience and the opportunities to connect with alumni. Levy and Breschi are dedicated to supporting their student-athletes well after their time at Carolina, and the New York City trip has already begun to pay dividends with internships and full-time employment for the student-athletes.Â
