November 9, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Paris Kea scored a game-high 25 points to lead North Carolina to a 73-60 victory over Kent State on Friday from Carmichael Arena.
North Carolina (2-0) was led by Kea, but also received a double-double from Janelle Bailey with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Koenen grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Megan Carter had 17 points for Kent State (0-1).
UNC made eight of its first 14 shots of the game to take a 25-10 lead in the late stages of the first quarter. Kea scored the first six points of the quarter by draining consecutive three-pointers and would lead all scorers with 11 points in the half.
The final 12 minutes of the half, however, belonged to the Golden Flashes. Though the Tar Heels never relinquished their lead, Kent State enjoyed a 21-11 scoring edge in the second period to make it a 36-35 UNC advantage at intermission.
Asiah Dingle gave Kent State its first lead with the opening basket of the second half, but it only lasted for 14 seconds after Bailey answered right back in the paint for the Heels.
Carolina's defense only allowed five more points the remainder of the third quarter, stretching its lead out to 48-42 heading to the final 10 minutes.
The Golden Flashes scored the first six points of the period and took the lead, 52-50, moments later on a layup from Carter with five minutes, 16 seconds to go.
Kea took the game over from there. Her unconventional four-point play gave UNC a bit of breathing room, and Stephanie Watts, who was scoreless through 30 minutes, drilled a triple to ice the win for the Tar Heels. Watts scored all nine of her points in the final period.
