Defense Pushes UNC Past VCU, 59-47

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina used a strong defensive performance to notch a 59-47 victory over VCU on Wednesday afternoon from Carmichael Arena.
Janelle Bailey scored a season-high 18 points and was a rebound shy of another double-double for North Carolina (3-0). Paris Kea added 15 points and four steals and Shayla Bennett had 10 points.
Carolina held VCU scoreless for over 10 minutes in the second half to seize control of the game. Keyed by its defense, the Tar Heels put together an impressive 20-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters. The lead grew to 47-26 on a three-pointer from Kea early in the final period.
VCU (2-1) never got closer than a dozen points of the Heels in the final seconds. Sydrei Archie led the Rams with 11 points and five boards.
Bailey (10) and Kea (8) combined for 18 of Carolina's 25 points in the first half. The Tar Heels went into halftime with a slim 25-22 edge over the Rams.
North Carolina hosted its inaugural Education Day surrounding the early tip-time inside Carmichael Arena. UNC partnered with seven local elementary schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. Approximately 700 fifth graders from Estes Hills Elementary, Frank Porter Graham Elementary, McDougle Elementary, Northside Elementary, Rashkis Elementary, Scroggs Elementary and Seawell Elementary were in attendance.
Carolina begins a five-game stretch away from home at Colorado on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
