Hatchell Becomes All-Time ACC Wins Leader
December 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Janelle Bailey notched a double-double and North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell become the Atlantic Coast Conference's all-time wins leader in women's basketball with an 83-62 victory over UNCG on Friday night from Carmichael Arena.
Hatchell, in her 33rd season at Carolina, passes former Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan with her 740th victory. Hatchell is 740-314 at UNC.
Bailey's third-straight double-double (sixth of the season) set the tone for Carolina's dominance in the paint all game long. The Heels enjoyed a 42-20 edge in paint points and 42-33 in total rebounding.
Stephanie Watts added 19 points for North Carolina (7-4) to go along with Bailey's 23 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Koenen hauled in 10 boards to go with her six points.
UNCG (4-6) junior Dijana Milisic, who entered the game as the Southern Conference's leading scorer at 20.0 points per game, had 28 points.
UNCG opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer, but that was the only lead for the visiting Spartans. Carolina immediately responded with a 15-3 run and never looked back in improving to 11-0 all-time in the series.
Bailey scored 12 points in the first quarter to send UNC ahead 25-13 after 10 minutes.
The lead grew to as many as 22 points midway through the second period. Behind Bailey's 18 at the half, the Tar Heels led 43-23.
Jaelynn Murray scored six successive points in the third quarter, including her first triple of the season, to pad the Carolina cushion at 58-33 in the late stages of the quarter.
Leah Church (nine points) knocked down back-to-back triples to close out the quarter and the lead grew to 30, 67-37, early in the fourth quarter.
