Carolina Downs Rice In Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Janelle Bailey and Shayla Bennett each registered a double-double to lead North Carolina to a 71-50 victory over Rice late Friday night from Myrtle Beach Convention Center.Â
North Carolina (8-4) put four players in double figures, led by Bailey's game high 19 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. Bennett had a season-high 10 assists to go with 13 points for her first double-dip with the Tar Heels.Â
Stephanie Watts added 12 points and Leah Church had a season-high 11. The two sharpshooters and Bailey each made three shots apiece from beyond the arc.
A pair of three's from Bailey and eight total points from the sophomore standout allowed the Tar Heels a 16-10 edge after 10 minutes.Â
The Carolina defense was on display in the second stanza, surrendering only six points to the Owls in the quarter. Meanwhile, Bailey's third triple of the half and two more from distance by Church lifted the Tar Heels to a 33-16 cushion at halftime.
Watts ran off eight successive points to make it a 20-point, 43-23, Tar Heel lead with six minutes, 17 seconds on the third quarter clock.
Bennett's runner just before the third quarter horn put UNC ahead 55-37 going to the fourth. Watts knocked down another triple to open the final period and Carolina never looked back in picking up its third win in a row.
Carolina faces Auburn on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on Stadium Network.Â
