UNC Caps Fall Fencing With Successful Day
December 2, 2018 | Fencing
The Tar Heel fencers closed out fall competition Sunday with a successful day at the Brandeis Invitational. Competing in Waltham, Mass., the men's team finished 6-0 and the women were 4-2.
Â
UNC faced off against Brown, Cornell, Incarnate Word, MIT, Yale and host Brandeis.
Â
Standout individual performances on the women's side came from junior Carlexa Fevry, who went 15-2 in foil; junior Jackie Litynski, who went 13-1 in sabre; and freshman Bridget Becchina, who went 13-2 in sabre. Two other first-year fencers had strong performances, with Rebecca Barnes going 11-6 in epee and Aubrey Molloy finishing 6-1 in foil. Sophomore Clara Somfelean was 10-5 in sabre, which ran up more wins than any other weapon as epee and foil  continued to battle injuries.
Â
On the men's side, junior Jacob Henkels went 12-2 in epee, with freshman Ezra Wright also turning in a strong performance in that weapon at 8-5. In foil, freshman James Mulligan went 11-5 and junior Brian Lee was 8-4. In sabre, where starter Connor Ritchey was out with an injury and freshman Beni Rabinowicz was competing hurt, freshman Daniel Mogilevski led the way with a 7-2 record, and junior Samuel Tate was 6-2. Rabinowicz finished 5-1.
Â
"The most important thing is the improvement the team made from the first competition to this one," UNC coach Ron Miller said, comparing Sunday's outing to the team's performance at the Ohio State Elite Invitational Duals Nov. 17-18. "The men were much more balanced. In particular, men's foil made remarkable improvement."
Â
UNC has battled injuries and illnesses throughout the fall, but Miller hopes to have everyone back and healthy when the team opens spring competition on Jan. 13 at the Penn State Duals.
