University of North Carolina freshman Ryan Gerard shot a 4-under-68 to lead the Tar Heels to a 5-under-par finish in the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate.
Carolina is in fourth place in the 20-team field after 36 holes. The final round is set for Saturday.
UNLV leads the tournament at 21-under-par, six shots of ahead of Texas A&M, 11 in front of Arizona and a dozen clear of the Tar Heels.
Gerard had four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys to shoot 68. It was his third round in the 60s in his last five rounds. He is tied for 11th, seven shots behind the leader, Shintaro Ban of UNLV.
UNC's Ben Griffin shot 73, but is tied for 20th place at 2-under-142. Austin Hitt and Jose Montaño shot even par today and stand tied for 26th and 33rd, respectively. William Register had the Tar Heels' second-low round of the day with a 71 and is 1 over for the tournament.
