CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Carolina gymnastics will continue their season on Monday, Feb. 19th at 3:30 p.m. in Carmichael Arena, their first home competition since Jan. 19th. The Tar Heels host Brown in their annual Pink Meet, celebrating the efforts of the Get REAL & HEEL program to support breast cancer survivors.
"[Get REAL & HEEL] is a post-cancer treatment therapy program for breast cancer survivors," explains UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "It's sponsored by the Lineberger Cancer Center and the UNC Exercise and Sports Science Department… Chemotherapy really tears your body up and people who have gone through that have to rebuild. What the Get REAL and HEEL program does is it helps people through an exercise program and counseling rebuild their lives after going through chemotherapy or cancer treatment."
The Tar Heels will be decked out in pink leotards and pink Tar Heel tattoos in honor of those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer, and they could not be more excited about the opportunity to recognize such an impactful organization at their first meet in Chapel Hill in a month.
"We've been away from home for a while," said Galvin after Saturday's competition. "Even though [Saturday] was a local meet in Raleigh, it wasn't in Chapel Hill so we're excited about being back in Carmichael Arena. The team was talking about that. We feel like we haven't been in Carmichael Arena in forever. It's going to be good to be back in our gym."
Carolina gymnastics is ready to bring the enthusiasm and motivation they've maintained during their long stint on the road back to home. The team is well adjusted to gymnastics in the afternoons, but they hope fans will have time to come cheer them on at the earlier-than-usual start time.
Pink Tar Heel tattoos will be available and the first 144 fans will receive cupcakes. The Tar Heels hope to see plenty of pink in the stands on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
