UNC Falls As Syracuse Sets ACC 3FG Record
February 22, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Syracuse set a program and Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball record with 20 three-pointers to notch a come-from-behind, 86-80 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night.
Tar Heel senior Jamie Cherry was honored in a pre-game ceremony in her finale at Carmichael Arena. She promptly scored 23 points for North Carolina (14-14, 4-11 Atlantic Coast Conference). Freshman Janelle Bailey had another monster game with 25 points and 12 rebounds and Paris Kea had 12.Â
Gabrielle Cooper scored a game-high 28 points to pace Syracuse (21-7, 9-6). Miranda Drummond had 24 points and Tiana Mangakahia added to her NCAA-leading assist total with 14 to go along with 12 points.Â
UNC outrebounded the Orange by a 39-27 margin and shot 48 percent from the floor, but was unable to overcome Syracuse's historic three-point barrage. Cooper's eight three-pointers tied for the most ever made against UNC, equalling the total set by Kennesaw State's Ashley Holliday on Nov. 27, 2011. Cooper was 8-of-10 from distance, while Drummond was an impressive 7-for-8.Â
Carolina made 10 of its first 14 shots to grab an early 23-20 lead. The Tar Heels did a nice job spreading the scoring around as all five starters were in the scorebook midway into the first quarter.
Syracuse was nearly as efficient, knocking down seven triples in 12 attempts in the opening period to take a 28-27 lead after 10 minutes.Â
The Orange scored the initial bucket of the second quarter, then went scoreless the next five minutes. That allowed Carolina to go up 39-30 thanks to a 12-0 run. Cherry scored five of the dozen unanswered points.
SU put together a 11-2 run of its own, and a scoop shot from Mangakahia at the halftime buzzer tied the game at 41-41 heading to intermission.Â
Bailey scored 10 points alone in the third quarter to keep Carolina within 66-62. But the Orange drained five triples in the fourth quarter to open up a double-digit lead.
