Carolina Gymnastics Travels to No. 6 Alabama
February 28, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — After a weekend off from competition, North Carolina gymnastics will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday, March 2nd at 8:30 p.m. ET.
"We are very excited about going to Alabama," said UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for the tradition of that program. Former head coach Sarah Patterson and her husband David Patterson are good friends of mine. Dana Duckworth, who is now the head coach, was a national champion as a gymnast at Alabama… Dana and Bryan [Raschilla], who is the associate head coach, are just good people."
Prior to their break from competition, the Tar Heels competed in two meets over the course of three days to earn their best (196.050) and third-highest (195.400) scores of the season. Those overall scores included two stellar groups of floor routines which earned rotation scores of 49.425 and 49.400, respectively. Carolina's floor performance in the quad meet at NC State marked its highest score on floor since the 2010 season and the first back-to-back scores of at least 49.400 in over 16 years.
"We're going in ranked No. 7 in the nation on floor exercise," said Galvin. "I was just telling Bryan [Raschilla] that we're excited about competing there because we know that the judging will be good, the fans will be enthusiastic and supportive… We've been looking forward to this one just like the Oklahoma trip and Arizona next week. These are all exciting trips."
Though the floor exercise has been the spotlight event for Carolina this season, the Tar Heels are hoping to give everything they have in every event at Alabama. Carolina has broken 49.000 on vault and floor in four consecutive meets and have season-highs of 49.100 on bars and 49.225 on beam.
"I know our team is going to have a good experience," said Galvin. "The team does a really special production of the whole meet. The way they run their meets is a lot of fun."
