Montaño's 67 Leads UNC in San Diego

Tar Heels tied for third in Lamkin SD Classic
Tar Heel senior Jose Montaño began his second round of the day with a birdie, eagle, birdie start and finished with another eagle for a 5-under-par 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to a tie for third place after 36 holes at the Lamkin San Diego Classic.
The Tar Heels shot even par in Monday's first round at the San Diego Country Club, then followed that with a 4-under-par 284 to move into third. Oklahoma State shot a blistering 18-under-270 in the first round and is 23 under after day one. San Diego State is 6 under, two shots ahead of the Tar Heels and Texas Tech.
Montaño shot a 76 in the first round and did not count in UNC's team score for just the second time in 22 rounds this season, but shot his fifth round in the 60s this season in the afternoon with four birdies and two eagles.
Freshman Ryan Gerard had six birdies in his second round en route to a 2 under 70. Senior William Register had Carolina's low round in the morning with a 68, but followed that with a 75.
Montaño and Register are tied for 19th place at 1-under 143. Gerard is at even par 144 and is tied for 22nd. Senior Ben Griffin is 1 over after 36 holes.
Sophomore Austin Hitt, playing as an individual entry in this tournament, is tied for seventh after shooting 72-67 and is 5-under-par. Hitt had four birdies, an eagle and only one bogey in matching his career-low 67 in the second round.
Hitt is four shots behind the individual leader, Fredrik Nilehn of Texas Tech, who went out in 69-66 and is 9-under-par.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
