April 11, 2018 | Softball
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite a multi-hit game from Kiani Ramsey, the Tar Heels dropped a nonconference matchup at James Madison, 9-0 in five innings.
Ramseys' 2-for-2 performance extended her hitting streak to 11 games and also marked her fifth multi-hit game in her past seven starts. Madison Naujokas and Ashley Samuels led the Dukes with three and four RBI, respectively.
Carolina started strong in the first with a runner in scoring position and one out. Ramsey knocked the ball to center for a leadoff single, but was left at third as the inning came to a close.
After a pair of fly-outs to center, Odicci Alexander laced a ball through the left side for a single. Kate Gordon doubled to left allowing Alexander to reach third before coming home on a Carolina error.
The Dukes continued and took a commanding lead by the second inning for a 5-0 lead. Kierstin Roadcap singled to left to lead off the second before Naujokas sent a three-run homer straight back, giving the Dukes a four-run edge. Morgan Tolle mirrored her teammate with a solo-shot in the same inning before the Tar Heels brought in Hannah Nommensen and fly-out ended the frame.
After two scoreless innings, the Dukes' Samuels clinched the 9-0 win on a grand slam for her fourth home run of the year.
Brittany Pickett made her 25th start in the circle for Carolina in the loss. Nommensen struck out one in the remaining 2.2 innings of relief. JMU's Odicci Alexander earned the win in the complete game shutout.
The Tar Heels return home to host NC State at Anderson Stadium for a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Monday.
