Tar Heels Shut Out NC State in Series Opener, 6-0
April 13, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Highlighted by Brittany Pickett's ten strikeouts, Carolina clinched the series opener over NC State, 6-0, limiting the Wolfpack to four hits on Friday night. The Tar Heels scored in the first inning and extended their lead to five in the second to solidify the win and improve to 24-20 on the season and 12-4 in ACC play.
Beginning the game with three strikeouts in the first, Pickett's 10 Ks matched a career single-game high while improving her record to 22-7. On the offensive side, Kiani Ramsey went 2-for-3 and extended her hitting streak to 12 games with her fourth multi-hit game in row. Returning to the lineup, Leah Murray scored two of Carolina's six-runs, including the game-winner on a wild pitch in the first.
Despite Timberlyn Shurbutt's 2-for-3 outing for the Wolfpack, NC State left eight on base in the game to fall to 21-20 overall, 4-11 in conference.
Beginning the game, Murray led off with a slapper to third, reaching second on a NC State miscue. A sacrifice bunt by Ramsey moved her to third before a wild pitch allowed Murray to score for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
After a leadoff double by Cheyenne Balzer, two ground outs and Pickett's fourth strikeout stranded the runner.
In the second, a pair of hit-by-pitches set the stage for Carolina's four-run inning. Destiny DeBerry drove in the first two runs on an RBI-single. Murray mirrored her teammate for a 4-0 lead before Taylor Wike drew a walk to load the bases. Kristina Burkhardt drove in the final run on a single to second before the inning ended.
The Wolfpack threatened again in the fourth inning with two runners on and one out, but Pickett dealt her seventh strikeout to strand the runners.
Megan Dray laced the ball through the left side for a leadoff single. A fielder's choice moved runners to the corners setting the stage for a double steal by DeBerry and Brittany West who stole home for a 6-0 win.
Pickett tossed her 23rd complete game in the win, while State's Devin Wallace went the distance in the loss.
Carolina and NC State resume the series at Anderson Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
