Carolina Falls to NC State to Even Up Series on Senior Day
April 14, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – In senior day fashion, seniors Katelyn Shifflett and Taylor Wike led the Tar Heels each recording a hit despite the setback to NC State on Saturday afternoon, 10-1 in six innings.
Shifflett was a perfect 2-for-2 while Wike singled in the sixth. Brittany West and Hailey Cole pulled off a double steal in the third for Carolina's lone run after Megan Dray's leadoff single. However it wasn't enough for the win, as the Tar Heels slide to 24-21, 12-5 in conference. The Wolfpack had six players with multi-hit games en route to the win, improving to 22-20 on the season, 5-11 in ACC play.
In senior day style, Wike caught a line drive for the first out. However, a trio of hits for the Wolfpack gave them a 2-0 lead despite two strikeouts by Brittany Pickett.
NCSU tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the third inning on two RBI-singles through the left side.
Dray led off the third with a single to right field. A sac-bunt followed by Shifflett's single to right set the stage for Carolina's first run. Pinch runners West and Cole pulled off a double steal for the second game in a row for Carolina's first run.
A solo shot by Lily Bishop scored the Wolfpack's first run of the inning before a one-run single to left gave NCSU a 6-1 lead in the fourth.
In the fifth, Sierra Parkinson laced a leadoff single to left before Shifflett and Leah Murray did the same to load the bases. However, a fielder's choice ended the inning before any runs could score for Carolina.
The Wolfpack added four runs in the sixth before Hannah Nommensen took over in the circle. Shifflett prevented further runs, throwing down to Katie Bailiff for the fielder's choice at home.
Wike singled to right on her first pitch before Destiny DeBerry added one of her own, but the pair were unable to come around and score.
With four strikeouts on the day, Pickett took the loss in 4.0 innings of work. Kellyn Daly started the fifth inning, striking out her first batter before Nommensen closed out the final 0.2 innings. NCSU's Kama Woodall went the distance for the win.
Carolina and NC State will play for the series win 7 p.m. Monday at Anderson Stadium. Fans can watch Monday's series finale live on ESPNU.
