UNC Eases Past Wake In ACC Quarterfinals
April 27, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CARY, North Carolina - Junior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer's win on court six sent second ranked and No. 3 seed North Carolina to a 4-1 victory over No. 34/11th seed Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference Championship women's tennis quarterfinal match on Friday afternoon from Cary Tennis Park.
North Carolina (24-3) advances to the ACC semifinals for the 10th year in a row, and evens its record to 5-5 all-time against Wake Forest (19-13) in the ACC Championship.
The two semifinal matches on Saturday feature the top-four seeds and will be shown live on ACC Network Extra beginning at 10 a.m. The Tar Heels take on second-seed Georgia Tech in a rematch of the 2017 tournament final that went in favor of UNC. The other match pits top seed Duke against fourth-seed Miami.
Friday's quarterfinal match started one hour, 25 minutes late due to an overnight rain storm that pushed back what was supposed to be an 11:30 a.m. start. The Demon Deacons proved to be the better side in capturing the doubles point on a tiebreaker victory on court two. Carolina's third court duo of Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones won 6-4 to highlight the doubles effort by the Tar Heels.
Singles was a different story as the match moved deeper into the afternoon.
Carolina took five of six first sets and never really looked back in downing the Demon Deacons. No. 96 Jessie Aney looked strong in earning a 6-1, 6-4, victory on court five to tie the match at 1-1. The victory marked the 100th singles win in the junior's Tar Heel career.
No. 7 Jones and No. 41 Sara Daavettila secured wins side-by-side on courts one and three to quickly make it 3-1 in favor of the defending champs. Ouellet-Pizer was not far behind with the clincher on court six, 6-4, 6-4.
