April 28, 2018 | Softball
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Coming down to the final inning, North Carolina fell short Syracuse in the pitchers' duel for the 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon. With the series finale called due to rain, the Tar Heels sit at 28-25 on the season, 15-8 in ACC play while the Orange own a 28-19 record, 9-12 in conference.
Kristina Burkhardt led Carolina's offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Brittany Pickett tossed her 29th complete game, striking out three with a single earned run. Rachel Burkhardt led the Orange with a pair of hits and the game-winning home run for the walk-off. Syracuse's AnnaMarie Gatti went the distance for the win.
Between Pickett and Gatti, hitters were limited to three extra-bases hits and one walk on the day. However, Rachel Burkhardt was the difference maker to clinch the win in the pitchers' duel.
In the second, Kristina Burkhardt chopped the ball to center for a single in the second. 'Cuse responded with a pair of singles in the bottom of the frame, but a Pickett strikeout ended the inning.
Kiani Ramsey mirrored Burkhardt's at-bat with a ball to center, but a strikeout ended the inning in the sixth. Burkhardt laced her second hit of the day through the right side before heads up base running moved her to third on a wild pitch. However, a ground-out stranded the runner.
After scattering five hits throughout the first six innings, 'Cuse's Rachel Burkhardt launched the ball to center for the win on her senior day.
The Tar Heels conclude the 2018 regular season, hosting Campbell Friday at 7 p.m.
