Tar Heel 3V8 Leads The Way In Florida
April 7, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Tar Heel boats took a gold and two silvers Saturday as the UNC rowing team raced at the Sunshine State Invitational, hosted by the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The third varsity eight, which recently shared Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week honors, won gold in a four-boat field that included ACC-rival Clemson. The second varsity eight and the varsity four took silver.
"We are very pleased with the progress we are making each week and feel really good with what we are doing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said.
Racing started on Friday afternoon with heats, and the third varsity eight came in first then, too. On Saturday morning in the finals, the 3V8 came out on top in 6:53.40.
The second varsity eight was third in the heats but second in the finals, ahead of Clemson after trailing the Tigers on Friday. "They had an amazing race on Friday night," Haney said. "We talked about how we're going to make that even better for Saturday morning and they definitely did it and had the race of a lifetime this morning to get that second-place finish. I'm incredibly proud of them as they continue to gain confidence and speed each week."
The varsity four placed fifth in the heats but grabbed second in the finals, behind only Clemson. "Way to rebound from a subpar performance from Friday to today for the 1V4," assistant head coach Anthony Brock said. "They fought the entire way down the course today to bring home a silver medal."
The varsity eight placed fifth Saturday in a very tight race, just two seconds from third place. Carolina was seventh in the heats on Friday.
"The varsity eight had a tough race on Friday and I was really proud of them for being able to come back and race the way they know how to race on Saturday," Haney said. "We are moving on Clemson and Miami and other teams that are traditionally fast and we're feeling good about the progress that were making each week. We are looking forward to the month ahead to work on training as we prepare for Georgetown and ACC's to wrap up the season."
The second varsity four placed fifth on Friday and sixth in the heats, with the challenge of two different lineups and rough conditios on Saturday.
The Tar Heels' next race is their home event of the season. They'll host Georgetown on April 28 at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. Stay tuned to GoHeels.com for details and remember to follow Carolina rowing on Twitter and Instagram @UNCRowing.
