CHAPEL HILL - Madinah Muhammad, a 1,000-point scorer in three seasons at Ole Miss, has signed an athletic scholarship agreement to play women's basketball at the University of North Carolina.
Â
Per NCAA regulations, Muhammad will sit out the 2018-19 school year and will have one season of eligibility remaining for the 2019-20 campaign.
Â
"We're thrilled that Madinah has chosen to join our Carolina basketball family," said Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell. "Madinah is a dynamic guard that impacts the game on both ends of the floor. She comes from one of the best high school programs in the country and is a perfect fit for our up-tempo style of play. We welcome her with open arms to Chapel Hill."
Â
Muhammad, a 5-8 shooting guard from Chicago, started 72 of 87 games in three years for the Rebels, scoring 1,079 points and knocking down 154 three-point attempts. Her career-high 31 points came at No. 10 Tennessee on Jan. 25, 2018 and reached 29 points four other times in her career.
Â
"I'm blessed and so excited to join the Tar Heels, said Muhammad. "Playing for a Hall of Fame coach is something I've always dreamed of doing and their style of play will help me excel on the court.
Â
"After getting to know the coaching staff and team on my visit, I saw what a close family they are and knew it was the place for me. I'm excited about the future at UNC and I look forward to growing not only as a player but also as a young woman off the court."
Â
She ranked eighth in the Southeastern Conference with a team-leading 16.8 points per game during the 2017-18 season. Muhammad was also sixth in the league with 67 triples.
Â
As a prep star, Muhammad played at Whitney Young, considered one of the top basketball programs in the country. She helped guide her team to a pair of state championships and was considered the No. 22 overall player in her class coming out of high school.Â
Â
"Madinah has a strong love for the game. She works hard at being her best and her competitiveness and desire to win should be a great asset at UNC," said Corry Irvin, head coach at Whitney Young.
Â
"I really enjoyed coaching Madinah, who I call 'The Process,' because she understood everything she does is a process to be the best she can be. She will have a great career at UNC," said Mac Irvin, Mac Irvin Chicago Fire Travel TeamÂ
