"First and foremost, I just want to congratulate James Madison," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "They've had a tremendous season and we saw them at the beginning of the year and now at the last game of the season for us. We came across a really tough JMU team and we just didn't get into much rhythm offensively in the first half, We needed to shift our defense around in the second half, which obviously was somewhat effective. But they're just a tremendous team that's really well balanced and we just we struggled with that today."
Taylor Moreno (7-2) started for Carolina in goal and played the first 37:51 of the game, allowing 11 goals and making six saves. The Dukes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game before UNC scored two in a row to make it 3-2. After JMU responded to make it 5-2 and the Tar Heels again had back-to-back goals to cut it to 5-4, the Dukes ended the half on a 3-0 run for an 8-4 lead at the break.
