McCool Leads Three Tar Heel IWLCA All-Americas
June 14, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—National Midfielder of the Year Marie McCool led three University of North Carolina players on the 2018 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I All-America team, the IWLCA announced on Thursday.  Sophomore Katie Hoeg joined McCool in the IWLCA first team, while McCool's fellow senior Ela Hazar made the third team.
McCool is the second National Midfielder of the Year in Carolina history, joining Christine McPike (2002). The Moorestown, N.J., native earned first-team honors from the IWLCA for the third consecutive year and is just the third Tar Heel to earn first-team All-America accolades three times.
McCool led UNC and the ACC in draw controls with a career-high and school-record 165 in 2018. She also led Carolina in ground balls (35), caused turnovers (23) and game-winning goals (six) and was third on the team in assists (23) and points (82). She is the only UNC player to be a two-time finalist for the Tewaaraton Award and was named a finalist for the Honda Award for Lacrosse earlier this month for the second year in a row.
Hoeg earned first-team All-America and first-team All-ACC accolades in 2018 in her first year as a starter. She led Carolina with a career-high and school-record 89 points and a UNC single-season record 50 assists while also leading the ACC in assists and assists per game (2.38). Hoeg was third in the ACC in points per game (4.24) in helping Carolina to the NCAA Tournament semifinals this spring. Hoeg also was UNC's NCAA Elite 90 at the 2018 NCAA championship weekend, posting the highest cumulative grade point average on the Tar Heel team.
Hazar ended her career last month as the runaway career assist leader in Carolina history with 121 (second-place Becky Lynch had 92), earning second-team All-ACC honors. She had eight assists in the regular season win at Northwestern and had a career-high 47 assists in 2018, the second-highest total in school history. She was second in the ACC in assists and assists per game (2.24) in 2018.
Boston College's Sam Apuzzo was the IWLCA National Player of the Year and National Attacker of the Year. BC's Elizabeth Miller was the Defender of the Year and Colorado's Julia Lisella was the Goalkeeper of the Year.
