July 12, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's basketball program placed eight student-athletes on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2017-18 school year. As a department, UNC set a record for the third year in a row with 391 Tar Heels honored for their work in the classroom.
Taylor Koenen, Liz Roberts, Olivia Smith, Emily Sullivan and Destinee Walker earned their second straight spot on the honor roll, while Leah Church, Jocelyn Jones and Naomi Van Nes were given a place on the list for the first time.
"We strive to continue to improve in every area, and academic performance is at the top of that list," UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. "We're very proud of our student-athletes' academic achievement and the fact that for the third year in a row we've had a record number of Tar Heels named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. We congratulate all of these students and applaud them for their hard work and the way they represent Carolina."
The ACC Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. The conference recognized a record 4,650 student-athletes.
UNC's record total marked an improvement of six over last year, when the Tar Heels had an all-time high of 385 students honored. Carolina had 356 in 2015-16 and 339 recognized in 2014-15, following a then-record 347 in 2013-14. UNC's total in 2012-13, 329, was also a record at the time.
The number of UNC students honored for 2017-18 is roughly half of Carolina's total number of student-athletes and is an improvement of more than 100 student-athletes over the past decade.
