Matson Earns ACC Weekly Honor
August 28, 2018 | Field Hockey
GREENSBORO, N.C. (The ACC.com) – North Carolina's Erin Matson has been named ACC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week following the season's first weekend of action. The Tar Heels opened the season with a pair of wins at brand-new Carolina Field Hockey Stadium in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
Syracuse's Roos Weers and Duke's Jillian Wolgemuth shared Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Matson had two goals and two assists to help No. 2 North Carolina to a pair of wins over the past weekend. In her collegiate debut, the Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, freshman assisted on two penalty corner goals against No. 5 Michigan and scored one of her own early in the second half in a 5-1 win Friday. Two days later, she scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute of play as North Carolina came back from a 1-0 deficit to post a 2-1 win over No. 20 Iowa in overtime.
Weers scored a goal in each game as No. 11 Syracuse opened the season with a pair of wins. In Friday's 4-1 win over Vermont, the Bussum, Netherlands, senior played a key role in limiting the visiting Catamounts to only eight shots. In Sunday's 1-0 win over No. 21 Albany, Weers tallied the game-winning goal and spearhead a defensive unit that stopped a late Albany push of five corners in the final 20 seconds of the game, four of which happened after time expired.
Wolgemuth helped lead third-ranked Duke to a pair of wins against ranked opponents over the weekend. In Friday's 4-0 win over No. 22 William & Mary, she had the first assist of her career and anchored a defensive that held the Tribe to just three shots – and only one on cage. In Sunday's 4-3 overtime victory against No. 23 Liberty, the Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, junior keyed a defensive effort that allowed only 10 shots in over 72 minutes of action despite Liberty earning eight corners on the day.
The Tar Heels are back in action this weekend in Philadelphia, taking on No. 10 Princeton on Friday and host Penn on Sunday.
