Tar Heels Move Up Three Sports in Louisville
Freshman Dougie Ergood shot a 68 and sophomore Ryan Gerard had a 70 to lead the University of North Carolina men's golf team to a 2-under-par finish in the second round of the Louisville Cardinal Challenge Saturday at the U of L Golf Club.
Carolina moved up three spots today and stands in sixth place after 36 holes with one round to play. Duke leads at 34 under par. Louisville (-19), South Florida (-17), Mississippi State (-9) and Wake Forest (-6) round out the top five. The Tar Heels are one of six in the 16-team field to be under par after two rounds.
Ergood (Mount Laurel, N.J.) had three birdies and no bogeys on his first nine, then shot even par over his final nine holes to finish with a 3 under 69. That was his low round as a college golfer (he shot a 69 in the first round at Duke a week ago).
Gerard (Raleigh, N.C.) was 1 over on the back side where the Tar Heels began play on Saturday, but had three birdies on the front to finish with a 70.
Junior Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) suffered an early double bogey but battled back with birdies on two of his final four holes to post an even-par 71.
Ergood is tied for 13th and Hitt is tied for 21st in the individual standings. Duke's Alex Smalley leads at 15 under, three shots ahead of Mississippi State's Tanapat Pichaikool.
