Tar Heels Sweep Elon to Conclude Nonconference Play

ELON, N.C. – Despite a slow start to the match, North Carolina bounced back in commanding fashion for a 3-0 sweep of Elon on Tuesday night to wrap up nonconference play.
Elon (8-3) got off to a strong start to begin the match, leading until the 11-11 mark in set one. However, the Tar Heels (4-5) responded quickly to sweep the Phoenix in the newly opened Schar Center.
Destiny Cox led UNC with 10 kills for her sixth double-digit kill match this season. Ava Bell tacked on six kills while Raleigh Clark hit .500 with four. Hunter Atherton quarterbacked the Tar Heels, setting 22 of UNC's 33 kills. Carolina posted 8.0 total blocks, paved by Cox's three. Atherton and Madison Laufenberg each logged a solo block at the net.
Leah Daniel paced the Phoenix with 10 kills, hitting a team-best .273. Maddie Jaudon grounded Elon with a match-best 15 digs. The Phoenix was hindered by 23 attack errors, hitting .085, while UNC was able to clinch its third sweep of the season.
Carolina fell behind early in the first set before a kill by Aristea Tontai gave UNC the 12-11 lead. Elon answered back with four-point rally before Skylar Wine's second kill of the match knotted the frame at 17-all. A solo block by Atherton put the Tar Heels ahead 20-18 and forced Elon to use its second timeout. A pair of blocks by Cox, Tontai and Katharine Esterley set UNC up to take the first frame before Cox secured the 25-20 win with her fifth kill.
The Tar Heels picked up where they left off, taking a commanding 15-6 lead to begin the second stanza. Elon answered back to bring the match within six, fighting off one set point before UNC took a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win.
UNC continued in the third set, going on an early five-point run to force Elon to use a timeout at the 8-4 mark. The Phoenix answered back with a trio of two-point runs but was unable to capitalize for the win. Coming off the bench, Laufenberg registered her second solo block of the season for UNC's 20th point of the set. Elon went on a 3-0 run before Clark logged her fourth kill for match point. The Tar Heels secured the 25-18 win thanks to their eighth total block by Tontai and Clark.
UNC returns to its regular schedule to host Notre Dame and Louisville, Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., respectively.
