January 24, 2019 | Women's Basketball
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Janelle Bailey and Paris Kea combined for 47 points in guiding North Carolina to an 81-69 victory over Virginia Tech Thursday night from Cassell Coliseum.
Paris Kea scored a season-high 26 points as North Carolina (11-9, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) registered its first conference road win of the season. Janelle Bailey notched the ninth double-double of her sophomore campaign with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Stephanie Watts added 17 points and seven boards and Taylor Koenen added 11 points.
Dara Mabrey led Virginia Tech (13-6, 0-6 ACC) with 19 points, while Taylor Emery had 17.
UNC erased a 10-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Hokies 43-21 in the second half. Carolina's 9-1 run out of halftime set the tone. Bailey's layup tied the game at 54-54 at the five minute, 34 second mark of the third quarter.
Later in the third, Watts found Shayla Bennett on the break and she converted an old-fashioned three-point play to highlight 10-0 run that led to a 59-54 Tar Heel advantage.
Mabrey scored the last five points of the period to knot the game at 61-all going to the final quarter.
Bailey scored four successive points to extend the Carolina lead out to 69-62. A spin move in the lane from Watts increased the lead to 75-65 with 3:36 to play.
Carolina shot 51.6 percent in the game, but was a sizzling 64.0 percent in the second half.
Koenen, who spend a good portion of the day at the Autonomy Five conference at the NCAA's annual convention in Orlando, Fla., scored seven early points, but it was a triple from Bailey that tied the game at 21-21 after 10 minutes of end-to-end action.
Kea caught fire in the second period with 12 points. She gave UNC its first lead of the game, 31-29, and later 33-32, however, the Hokies answered with a 16-5 run to close the half and held a 48-38 edge at intermission.
