FSU Escapes With 64-63 Win

CHAPEL HILL - Florida State escaped Carmichael Arena with a 64-63 victory over North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon.
Paris Kea led North Carolina (9-7, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) with a team-high 17 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter on a controversial charge call with the game still in the balance.
Janelle Bailey added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Shayla Bennett had 15 points, including a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in regulation that got UNC within the final 64-63 margin. FSU dribbled out the final seconds to secure the win.
Nausia Woolfolk scored a game-high 20 points for Florida State (14-1, 2-0). Nicki Ekhomu had 16 points and Kiah Gillespie tossed in 14 and grabbed nine boards.
Bailey put Carolina ahead 58-54 in the fourth quarter, but the Seminoles scored 10 of the game's last 15 points over the final 3:02 to take home their second league road win of the week after topping Virginia, 63-61, on Thursday in Charlottesville.
The Seminoles came out of halftime ice cold on offense, going scoreless for five minutes, 47 seconds of the third quarter. A Koenen free throw had UNC within 40-39, and later Bailey converted a pair from the charity stripe to give Carolina its first lead of the game, 45-44, with 1:50 left in the third.
Stephanie Watts scored Carolina's initial eight points, but the Heels trailed 20-14 after 10 minutes.
Bennett ran off seven straight points in the second quarter to tie the game at 27-27 after UNC fell behind by as many as nine points. FSU knocked down its last five shots of the half to regain its nine-point cushion, 40-31, at intermission.
Carolina heads back out on the road to take on No. 14 Syracuse next Sunday at 3 p.m.
