Seventh-Ranked Tar Heels Take on National Field
Carolina tees it up for the fifth and final time in the fall semester when the Tar Heels travel to the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational outside Atlanta.
Â
The Lakeside Course at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta plays host to the event, which features five of the top 10 and nine of the top 25 teams in the current Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, including the Tar Heels, who have ascended to No. 7 in the nation.
Â
Carolina is coming off a runner-up showing at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, where the Tar Heels battled back after a seven-shot deficit heading into the final round. UNC caught the Irish on the back nine and made four birdies on the 71st hole before the hosts prevailed by just a single shot.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Burnett again led Carolina, tying for second at 6-under-207 after shooting 69-67 over the final 36 holes. Burnett has finished first (Turning Stone), second, third (Duke) and 17th (Olympia Fields) in the four tournaments and leads Carolina in stroke average at a scintillating 68.83. Golfweek ranks Burnett seventh in the country.
Â
No. 1 ranked Georgia Tech is the host school for the tournament. The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets are joined in the field by No. 2 Wake Forest, No.6 Pepperdine, No. 8 Duke, No. 13 Clemson, No. 21 Texas A&M, No. 22 Tennessee, No. 25 East Tennessee State, Southern California, defending NCAA champion Stanford, TCU, UCLA and Virginia.
Â
"This is one of the best tournaments in college golf and we're excited to compete here," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "None of our guys have seen this course so we will have some new challenges, but it's an excellent course with a field that is loaded with many of the best teams in the country. It's a great way to wrap up the fall and we look forward to the challenges and opportunities this weekend."
Â
For the second tournament in a row the Tar Heel lineup includes Burnett, junior Ryan Gerard, freshman Austin Greaser, senior Austin Hitt and sophomore Dougie Ergood.
Â
Gerard tied for fourth and Greaser placed sixth at Notre Dame.
