Gerard Still Fifth After 2nd Round 73
UNC's Ryan Gerard shot a 1-over-par 73 despite rainy, windy conditions to stay within three shots of the lead Saturday after two rounds at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational.
Gerard birdied the 18th hole to get to 2 under for the tournament, in a tie for fifth place three shots behind the leader, Texas A&M's William Paysse.
Weather was the story of the day with steady rain and winds gusting to 23 mile per hour. No team and only seven of 78 players shot under par. Six teams, including UNC, shot under par in Friday's opening round.
Carolina shot 15 over today and dropped from a tie for fourth place after round one to a tie for seventh. Duke's 3-over-291 was the best round of the day, which lifted the Blue Devils to the 36-hole lead at 1 under par.
Texas A&M is second at 2 over. UCLA (+4), Wake Forest and round one leader Pepperdine (+7), defending NCAA champion Stanford (+10) and UNC, Clemson and Tennessee (+12) are third through seventh. Top-ranked and tournament host Georgia Tech is 10th at 15 over.
In addition to Gerard's 73, Austin Greaser shot 76, Dougie Ergood and Austin Hitt shot 77 and Ryan Burnett posted a 78.
The third and final round is Sunday at the Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, Ga.
