Tar Heels Set To Host Phoenix Friday
November 21, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team hosts Elon Friday evening to close the four-game homestand that kicked off the season. Tipoff at Carmichael Arena is 6 p.m.
UNC is 3-0 this fall with wins over Western Carolina, Navy and Charleston Southern to open the season. After Friday's game against Elon, the Tar Heels won't play at home again until Dec. 5 against Illinois.
Elon comes into Friday's game 2-1, with a common opponent in WCU. UNC opened the season on Nov. 7 with a 92-55 win over the Catamounts, and the Phoenix kicked off its season against WCU two days later, winning 68-24.
Elon also has a win against Appalachian State, 67-66 in overtime, and is coming off a 63-55 loss last Sunday at Marist. Sophomore guard Brie Perpignan, junior guard Jada Graves and junior forward Jaylin Powell are averaging 9.7 points each to lead the team. Sophomore guard Kayla Liles is the team's top rebounder with 6.3 per game.
The Phoenix is coached by UNC alum Charlotte Smith, whose buzzer-beating three-pointer won the 1994 NCAA Championship for Carolina. Smith is in her ninth season at the program's helm.
Senior Taylor Koenen and junior Janelle Bailey lead the Tar Heels in scoring with 18.0 points per game. Freshman Malu Tshitenge, this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, is the team's top rebounder with 10.7 per game, and Bailey is averaging 10.0.
Fans coming to the game should keep in mind that there are several sporting events going on in the same area at the same time. As women's basketball tips off against Elon, the UNC women's soccer team will be hosting Colorado in an NCAA second-round game at Dorrance Field, adjacent to Carmichael. The UNC-Colorado matchup is the second of two NCAA women's soccer games, following a Michigan-Texas Tech game that begins at 3.
