November 22, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season with a 76-46 victory over Elon on Friday night at Carmichael Arena.
Forward Malu Tshitenge, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, continued her strong play with 18 points and 10 rebounds to register her second double-double of the young season.
Senior guards Taylor Koenen and Madinah Muhammad tossed in 14 points apiece, while junior Janelle Bailey added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Elon (2-2) struggled all night from the floor shooting 25.5 percent, the lowest total by a Tar Heel opponent this season. Brie Perpignan and Jada Graves led the Phoenix in scoring with nine points each.
Carolina held a comfortable 36-21 edge at the half, but exploded out of the gate with a 16-6 run to see the advantage grow to 52-27 at the halfway point of the third quarter.
The lead swelled to as many as 31 points, 66-35, after a three-pointer from freshman Kennady Tucker in the opening minutes of the fourth.
UNC's defense has not allowed more than 55 points in any game this season. Against Elon, the Tar Heels forced 18 turnovers and converted those miscues into 20 points.
Bailey got going early by scoring six points in the opening 10 minutes to give Carolina a 13-8 cushion over the Phoenix.
Koenen, who played in her 99th career game at UNC, stretched the lead out further with UNC's first three-pointer of the evening early in the second period. Tshitenge converted an old-fashioned three-point play midway into the quarter and Koenen followed that up with a jumper to make it 30-16.
Muhammad buried a triple just before the horn that gave UNC a 36-21 lead at intermission.
Carolina is back in action next week at the Cancun Challenge. The Tar Heels face Temple on Nov. 28 and Missouri on Nov. 29 in Mexico.
