Carolina Wins At Clemson, 70-64
February 10, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Clemson, S.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team fought back from a pair of significant deficits and overcame early shooting woes to pick up a 70-64 road win at Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday.
Shayla Bennett, Paris Kea and Janelle Bailey all tied for the team-high scoring with 15 points each. Bennett's and Kea offered up 10 points apiece in the second half.
It was a slow start for the Tar Heels on Sunday, as they hit just one of their first 11 shots, including coming up empty in six attempts from beyond the arc, and found themselves facing a 14-3 deficit.
Carolina responded in a big way thanks to a 13-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to take a 16-14 lead. Following the run, neither team could gain much of an edge, with four ties and six lead changes in the first half.
Leah Church provided a big lift off the bench in the second quarter, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to erase a six-point deficit and quickly tie the game at 27-27, before heading to the half with Clemson leading 33-32.
The second half started similar to the first, with the Tigers knocking down shots early, to extend their lead out to eight, 40-32, less than two minutes into the half.
That lead wouldn't last long. Bennett and Watts found a groove during the third quarter, and took the team from down eight to up one, 50-49, by making three three-pointers during an 11-2 run.
Watts and Bailey found success in the two-man game late, combining for a pick-and-roll and then a pick-and-pop on back-to-back possessions for a pair of buckets to keep the Tar Heels ahead, 68-64.
Clemson would not get any closer, as the Tar Heels were solid at the foul line, going 9-12 for the game, to hold off any potential Tiger comeback.
Watts finished with a stuffed stat sheet featuring 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and two steals. She also made three triples to give her 236 in her career, a figure that ties Nikki Teasley for the third most in program history.
Kea also did a bit of everything finishing with a 15-4-4 stat line and had five steals.
During the game, Bailey hauled in the 500th rebound of her career that spans 56 games for the Charlotte, N.C., native.
With the win, North Carolina moves to 15-10 and 6-5 in the ACC. Clemson drops to 15-9 and 6-5 in conference.
Carolina will return to action on Thursday, when the team travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers at 7 p.m.
