Carolina Stumbles At Pitt, 91-78

CHAPEL HILL - Seniors Danielle Garven and Cassidy Walsh both established single-game scoring highs and combined for 49 points in leading Pitt to a 91-78 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night from Petersen Events Center.
Shayla Bennett netted a season-high 25 points to pace North Carolina (15-11, 6-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). Janelle Bailey registered her 11th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Koenen had 14 points and seven boards and Stephanie Watts had 12.
Garven scored 27 points, while Walsh added 22 points behind a 6-of-8 shooting display from three-point land. Kauai Bradley had 15 points and eight boards and Jasmine Whitney added 13.
Pitt, who averages 5.6 three-pointers a game, knocked down five alone in the opening eight minutes. Walsh made four of the five triples to give Pitt a 28-21 edge.
The Panthers (10-16, 1-11) scored the first five points of the second to lead 33-21. Leah Church sprung free for a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to 38-32, however, Pitt remained white hot from distance. Whitney's late three made it 53-37 at halftime.
The lead grew to 18, 55-37 just 17 seconds into the second half on another 3-ball by the Panthers. Watts brought UNC within 62-53 at the 4:34 juncture of the third quarter.
Kea scored her first point of the game at the 8:11 mark of the fourth quarter. That sparked the Tar Heels, who used a 7-0 run that was capped by a three-point play from Bailey to get within 80-74.
A wide-open layup from Garven with just under two minutes remaining sealed Pitt's first win in conference this season.
Pitt finished the evening 11-of-19 from beyond the arc, while the Tar Heels were off the mark at just 7-of-31 from distance.
Carolina is back home to host Virginia on Sunday at 3 p.m. on the Regional Sports Network and ESPN app.
