Carolina Tops Virginia On Alumni Day, 70-53

CHAPEL HILL - On an afternoon that saw North Carolina honor its past on Alumni Day, the present day Tar Heels place four in double figures that led to a 70-53 victory over Virginia on Sunday from Carmichael Arena.
The 25th anniversary team that won the 1994 NCAA National Championship was recognized all weekend long, including Sunday when the entire team took the court between the third and fourth quarters to a resounding applause from the announced crowd of 3,445.
Additionally, the 1984 ACC Championship team was honored and all alumni on hand gathered during halftime.
Paris Kea scored a team-high 16 points, including seven alone in the fourth quarter for North Carolina (16-11, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). Taylor Koenen registered a double-double for the third time this season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Janelle Bailey and Shayla Bennett were each a rebound shy of their own double-double. Bailey scored 14 points and Bennett added 10.
Jocelyn Willoughby paced Virginia (10-15, 4-8) with 16 points and 10 rebound. Erica Martinsen tossed in 13 from the bench on the strength of four three-pointers and Dominique Toussaint added 10.
Playing in front of more than 70 former players, coaches and staff members, a balanced attack saw Carolina take a 16-11 lead after all five Tar Heel got in the scorebook in the opening five minutes of play. Virginia rallied to take the lead briefly, but Jocelyn Jones converted a pair from the line to give UNC a 21-20 edge after 10 minutes.
A rare four-point play from Leah Church increased Carolina's advantage at 32-24 approaching the mid point of the second period. It was a 12-point, 36-24, lead after Koenen scored on the fast break, however, Virginia scored the final eight points before the break to make it 36-32 Tar Heels at intermission.
Carolina answered the bell to open the third quarter by scoring eight-straight points to regain its footing and its lead at 44-32. Kea closed the quarter with a 12-foot jumper to keep the margin at 12, 55-43.
The Tar Heels put the game on ice with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter. Bailey put the finishing touches on the spurt with a paint bucket with 3:17 left in regulation.
Carolina hosts Boston College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
