Three Tar Heels in the Top 20 After 36 Holes
Austin Hitt and Ryan Gerard combined to shoot 5 under par in the first round and the Tar Heels are one of three teams in the field to score under par through 36 holes to finish day one at the Lamkin San Diego Classic in third place at 575 strokes.
Carolina is 1 under, 14 shots behind No. 5 ranked Arizona State (561) and four behind eighth-ranked Texas (571). The Tar Heels shot 285 in the first round and 290 in the second and are seven shots ahead of St. Mary's (Calif.) and eight clear of San Diego State.
Hitt (69-73) is tied for fifth at 2 under 142, six shots behind Pierceson Coody of Texas. Hitt is one of three Tar Heels in the top 20 – Joshua Martin is tied for 14th (72-73, 1 over 145) and Ryan Burnett is tied for 18th (74-72, 2 over 146).
Gerard opened with a 70 and followed with 77 to post a 3 over 147. He is tied for 26th.
Third round play at the San Diego Country Club is Tuesday.
