CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's lacrosse team fell 14-8 Saturday afternoon to No. 1 Boston College in a top-three, Atlantic Coast Conference battle at UNC Lacrosse Stadium. Sophomore Jamie Ortega had three goals and an assist to lead the third-ranked Tar Heels in the loss.

UNC (8-2, 1-1 ACC) also got two goals from sophomore Taylor McDaniels and one each from Marisa DiVietro, Olivia Ferrucci and Gianna Bowe. Junior Katie Hoeg led UNC in assists with four and moved into third on UNC's all-time assists list with a career total of 89.

"Our result isn't what we wanted, but BC is a great team," UNC coach Jenny Levy said. "They have some of the best players in the country competing right now and they've been on their field for three or four years. We have a lot of respect for them."

Playing on a sunny, cool afternoon, Ortega opened the scoring 98 seconds into the game, on a pass from senior Kara Klages. That 1-0 lead was UNC's only advantage of the afternoon, however, as BC scored the next five goals and led 8-5 at halftime.

The Eagles opened the second half with three unanswered goals to make it 11-5. UNC didn't get a second-half goal until the period was more than halfway over, but after McDaniels scored with 13:35 to play to make it 11-6, the Tar Heels reeled off two more in span of just over four minutes. Bowe's goal came with 10:04 to play and less than a minute later, Ortega got her third of the afternoon to make it a three-goal game, 11-8.

The Tar Heels couldn't get another, though, and BC scored three more in the final 4:03.

"I thought it was a clinic on how to do the little things really well," Levy said. "They're a complete team right now and they tested us in ways we needed to get tested, so we can continue to evaluate ourselves to get better."

For the Eagles, senior Sam Apuzzo, the nation's leading scorer, had five goals. Dempsey Arsenault, Jordan Lappin and Sheila Rietano scored two each, and BC got single goals from Kenzie Kent, Cara Urbank and Taylor Walker. Kent led the way in assists with three.

BC, which stayed undefeated at 11-0 overall and 2-0 in ACC play, led 32-34 in shots and 15-9 in draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Moreno played the entire game for Carolina, making 11 saves, including seven in the second half. BC keeper Abbey Ngai made nine saves.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Virginia Tech. UNC plays the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va., on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Carolina's next home game is on April 13 against Syracuse.
