DURHAM, NH — Khazia Hislop won the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships on vault and tied for first place on floor to lead the Tar Heels to a fifth-place finish in Saturday's EAGL Championships. Carolina scored 193.950 and had a gymnast on the podium in each of the four events in the meet on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.
"The team came in with a lot of energy," said North Carolina head coach Derek Galvin. "It was one of our strongest team performances of the year. The team showed heart and courage. As a coach that is everything you want to see in a team and is all you can ask for."
Having five competitors on three events, we had no margin for error," continued Galvin. "I am pleased with the fact that we placed someone in the top-three on every event. It is unfortunate that we did not have the depth to stay in contention as a team."
Carolina opened the day with a 47.625 on bars led by Grace Donaghy. Donaghy set a season high and matched her career high with a 9.850, placing third in the meet of 35 competitors. Tar Heel Emery Summey also matched her career high in the event with a 9.725. She placed 21st in the meet. Drew Aldridge scored a 9.700 on the event, her second highest score this season.
Moving over to beam, Carolina scored a 48.700, which was its highest score on the apparatus since February 16th. Hislop placed second in the meet with a score of 9.875, her highest score since that same meet. Alexis Allen placed eighth in the event with a 9.800 on beam. Jamie DeCicco scored 9.750 and placed 11th in her last EAGL Championship.
Following a short break during the fourth rotation, Carolina competed on floor. Four of the five Tar Heels that competed scored 9.800+ to power the Heels to a team score of 48.875. Hislop scored a 9.900 to contribute to a three-way tie at first place in the event with Ava Watkins of New Hampshire and Alexa Philips of North Carolina State. Madison Hargrave scored 9.850 on floor to earn fourth place in the event. Lily Dean and Mikayla Robinson both scored 9.800 and placed 15th.
In its final event of the day, Carolina placed two gymnasts in the top five on vault and scored 48.750 as a team. Hislop won the event outright with a score of 9.875. Robinson was not far behind with a 9.825 and placing fourth in the contest. Hargrave placed 14th with a score of 9.725.
Hislop was the only gymnast at the event to place on the podium in three events as she placed first on vault and floor and second on beam. In addition, Hislop was the first Tar Heel to win an individual EAGL Championship on an event in consecutive years since 2004-06 when Courtney Bumpers won the EAGL Championship on Floor for three years. Hislop was also the first North Carolina gymnast to win two individual events at the EAGL Championships since Courtney Bumpers won three events in 2005.
"It is evident to anyone that has seen Khazia compete is that she is very talented," commented Galvin. "But, behind that talent is a tremendous amount of work in the details of each performance. The fine movements make her successful. She has put a tremendous amount of work to achieve what she has achieved. It is very satisfying to everyone on the team, teammates and the coaching staff, to see how things turned out for her today."
Carolina was the only team to place a gymnast in the top three competitors in each of the four events as Hislop had top-three finishes on vault, beam and floor and Donaghy had one on bars. With Hislop winning both vault and floor, Tar Heel gymnasts have won both events at the EAGL Championships each of the last two seasons. Carolina finished the meet with four top-three finishes, tying EAGL Champion New Hampshire for the most at the meet.
The Tar Heels await the Selection Show on Sunday to see their postseason fate. The Selection Show will reveal Regional placements for both teams and individuals. The show will be in the afternoon on Monday, March 25th.
