Tar Heels Defend Home Course, Win Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels men's golf team took home the title in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate for the second consecutive year, outlasting Illinois at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels, began the final round one stroke off the lead and shot even par on Sunday. With the wind blowing and low scores hard to come by, even par was enough to maintain their score and move up the leader board. Only UNCG and Michigan posted better team scores on Sunday.
"The teams we were playing with are some of the better teams in the country," Tar Heel head coach Andrew DiBitetto said. "I am just really proud of our guys for the way they competed, the way they fought and to pick up the victory."
Austin Hitt paced the Tar Heels for the weekend, shooting 3-under par and finishing in a three-way tie for second place. Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart ran away with the individual title, shooting a 9-under for the weekend to lead the second-place Illini.
"I didn't have my best stuff, but I was able to get around and put up a good score," Hitt said. "I was just trying to win it for the team and the seniors with it being their last time playing here. It was a good weekend."
Carolina showed a consistent and deep roster during the weekend, with Dougie Ergood and Josh Martin both carding 1-under for the weekend. Ryan Gerard and Ryan Burnett both shot 11-over on the weekend.
"I think Josh is technically in the five spot, but I think he picked up a top 10 finish," DiBitetto said. "So we have talent and we have depth on this team."
Carolina had been close, placing fourth in the past two events, each featuring loaded fields, before breaking through this weekend at the home course.
North Carolina will return to action next weekend, when they travel to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida for the John Hayt Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be contested on Sunday March 31, and Monday April 1.
