CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After dropping the doubles point, the North Carolina men's tennis team collected itself and reeled off four singles wins to hand No. 23 Miami its first Atlantic Coast Conference loss of the spring, 4-1 on a sunny afternoon at the Tar Heels' Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With tiebreakers in progress on Courts 1 and 3, UNC junior Josh Peck delivered the clinching win on Court 4, 6-3, 7-5 over Bojan Jankulovski.
Peck, from Calgary, Alberta, also won the decisive match as North Carolina beat No. 20 Oklahoma at home on Friday.
With the win over the Hurricanes, UNC improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in ACC play. Miami fell to 15-5 (6-1 ACC).
"It was a great team win," senior Blaine Boyden said. "In doubles, we were a little flat as a team overall, but after that I thought we did a really good job of coming out with a lot of energy and we bounced back. It was a great team win and we're excited to hopefully use that as momentum as we go into a big match on Wednesday."
The Tar Heels travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Wednesday to face No. 2 Wake Forest.
In doubles on Sunday, Miami won 6-3 on Court 2 and the Tar Heels took Court 1, where Boyden and junior William Blumberg won 6-3. The decision came down to Court 3, where junior Simon Soendergaard and sophomore Mac Kiger battled but ultimately fell 7-5.
The Tar Heels didn't let that slow them down coming into singles, taking the first sets on all six courts. Kiger, on Court 6, was the first to wrap up a win, beating Stephen Madonia 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Benjamin Sigouin picked up the next win, on Court 2. He beat Francisco Bastias 6-3, 6-3 to give Carolina the lead, 2-1.
Next to wrap up was Boyden on Court 5. He beat Franco Aubone 6-4, 6-1 to put the Tar Heels up 3-1. All three remaining singles matches were in tight second sets, evened up at 5-5 on Court 1 (Blumberg) and Court 3 (freshman Brian Cernoch). Both of those would eventually go into tiebreakers.
It was Peck on Court 4 who was able to put the match away. With two tiebreakers in play on the upper courts, he avoided that step on his court, wrapping up a 7-5 set to halt play.
