Martin's 69 Leads UNC to Tie at The Hayt

Tar Heel senior Joshua Martin (Pinehurst) matched his season-best round with a 69 and sophomore Ryan Gerard (Raleigh) shot a 2-under 70 to lead the University of North Carolina to a tie for the lead after 36 holes of play Sunday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Carolina shot 2 over par in the first round on Sunday morning, then returned to the course and shot 2 under in the afternoon. UNC is at even par, tied with Louisville at 576, three shots ahead of North Florida.
Carolina is ranked 29th by Golfstat and is one of nine ranked teams in the field, including No. 9 Auburn (592), No. 17 North Florida, No. 19 Clemson (580), No. 21 Alabama (589) and No. 22 Louisville.
Martin followed a first-round 77 with a 3-under 69 that featured an eagle on the 520-yard, par-5 18th hole (his ninth hole of the round) and three birdies on the front side. It was Martin's best round since he shot 69 in the opening round at the John Burns in Hawai'i.
Gerard had three birdies and only one bogey to post a second-round 70. He is tied for 12th place at even par.
Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) had an eagle and three birdies en route to a 69 in the first round. Hitt is tied for ninth place at 2-under 142.
Clemson's Bryson Nimmer and Louisville's Matthias Schmid are tied for first in the individual standings at 138 (-2).
Third-round play is scheduled for Monday. UNC is paired with Louisville and North Florida with tee times beginning at 9:10 a.m.
Carolina is looking for its second win in as many weeks. UNC won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on March 23-24.
