Tar Heels Battle Through Nasty Weather for 2nd-Place Finish
April 1, 2019 | Men's Golf
Hitt Birdies the Last for Runner-up Effort
Highs winds and steady rain caused scores to soar in the third and final round, but the University of North Carolina battled through those adverse conditions to earn a second-place tie at the Hayt Collegiate Invitational Monday at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Carolina and Louisville were deadlocked in first place at even par after 36 holes on Sunday, but it took a birdie on the final hole of the tournament by Tar Heel junior Austin Hitt to move UNC into a runner-up tie with the Cardinals at 24 over par. Tennessee won the team title by 13 strokes over UNC and Louisville after a third-round 294. That was the best round of the day by 10 shots over North Texas, which tied for 11th place.
"Today we saw some of the most difficult weather conditions I've ever seen on a golf course," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "The wind and rain were relentless. We're proud of the guys for the way they battled the conditions, but we are most excited about how today will help us in the future. In conditions today, every part of your game must be sharp. We all learned a lot, which will make us a better team."
Carolina shot 2-over-290 in the first round and 2-under-286 in the second to head into the final 18 holes with a share of the lead. The average score today among the 15 teams in the field, nine of which were ranked in Golfstat's top 50, was 36.1 strokes over par.
Ryan Gerard (Raleigh), who tied for 11th place with a 4 over total for the tournament, and Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) shot UNC's best rounds of the day with 76s. Hitt had a final-round 78 and also tied for 11th place.
Tennessee's Hunter Wolcott shot a 71 today to take medalist honors at 5 under par.
"Our team did a lot of good things this week and finished second against a very strong field," says DiBitetto. "We picked up quality wins and feel like we are continuing to make progress as the season goes on."
Carolina returns to action April 12-13 at the Arizona State University Thunderbird.
