Tar Heels Seventh Against Strong Field
Carolina junior Austin Hitt turned an eagle and four birdies into a second-round 67 to lead the Tar Heels to seventh-place after 36 holes at the Arizona State University Thunderbird Collegiate played Friday at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
UNC is one of 10 top-50 ranked teams in the 14-school field, which will conclude play with a final 18 holes on Saturday.
Hitt shot a 1 over 72 in the morning round, but eagled the 12th hole en route to his 67, which sends to him Saturday in seventh place in the individual standings.
The Tar Heels shot 4 over 288 in the opening round and 3 under 281 in round two. Hitt, Dougie Ergood (69) and Joshua Martin (70) all made the loop in under par in the afternoon round. Martin is tied for 14th place after shooting 71-70–141.
Ryan Gerard opened with a 70 and shot 75 in the second round.
The second-ranked Sun Devils lead the tournament at 13 under, nine strokes ahead of seventh-ranked Texas (-4) and 10 clear of top-ranked Oklahoma State, which is playing short-handed due to the Masters. Baylor is fourth at -2, UCLA and Arizona State's B team are -1 and the Tar Heels stand in seventh at plus one.
ASU's Chun An You is the individual leader at 8 under after a 66-67 start. He leads two players, including top-ranked Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State, by four strokes.
