Tar Heels Bounce Back for Strong 2nd Round at ACC Men's Golf
April 18, 2019 | Men's Golf
Ryan Gerard Leads UNC with a 67
Sophomore Ryan Gerard (Raleigh, N.C.) shot a 5 under 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to a 6-under-par finish in the second round at the ACC Men's Golf Championship played Thursday at the Old North State Club.
Carolina shot 282 over the second 18 holes, the third best team score in the second round after posting the highest score (297) Thursday morning. Only tournament leader Georgia Tech (270) and Wake Forest (276) were better than UNC's second-round 282. The 15-shot improvement from round one to round two was the best in the 12-team field.
Gerard is tied for 14th place at 3 under in the individual standings after shooting 74-67–141. Junior Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) is tied for 19th (72-71–143) and freshman Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) followed an opening-round 75 with a 2 under 70 and is tied for 28th at 1 over 145.
"Round one was terrible for us," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Unfortunately we weren't prepared to compete at a high level this morning and that is on me. I'm proud that our guys continued to fight and we had the third best round in the afternoon."
Georgia Tech is 30 under par for the championship, 17 strokes ahead of Duke, Florida State and Virginia, who are tied for second.
The Yellow Jackets' Andy Ogletree shot 66-65–131 (-13) to lead the individual standings by three strokes over FSU's John Pak.
The third and final round is scheduled for Saturday. The first two rounds, which were scheduled to be played today and Friday, were condensed to 36 holes today due to forecasts of inclement weather on Friday.
