CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina shut out NC State 4-0 Wednesday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference men's tennis action, kicking off a three-match homestand with the win over the 21st-ranked Wolfpack at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
No. 11 UNC improved to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play with the win. NC State fell to 14-8 (5-3 ACC).
"I'm very proud of my team," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "They had to step up and compete. We knew NC State would come at us with everything – they've got a very good team."
The win was the 400th ACC win in UNC program history, with 179 of those coming under Paul during the past 26 seasons.
UNC could pick up two more at home this weekend, with Boston College visiting Friday for a 4:30 p.m. match and Notre Dame coming in Sunday to play at noon. The Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day against the Irish, honoring lone senior Blaine Boyden between doubles and singles play.
Wednesday's landmark win came on a warm, sunny afternoon at Cone-Kenfield, where UNC opened by claiming a high-excitement doubles point. Boyden and junior William Blumberg, the reigning ACC Doubles Team of the Week, picked up a 6-3 Carolina win on Court 1 to open. The other two matches went to tiebreakers, with Carolina's Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard ultimately winning theirs 7-3 on Court 3 to give UNC the early lead.
In singles, Boyden was the first to finish, dispatching Robert Turzak 6-0, 6-2 on Court 5.
Tar Heel freshman Brian Cernoch also won in straight sets after taking the first 6-0, but he had to put in a lot more work in the second. Senior Igor Saveljic fought back to force a tiebreaker in the second set, and Cernoch ultimately won that 7-4.
Blumberg clinched the match on Court 1, beating #22 Alexis Galarneau 6-3, 7-5.
The rest of the matches were abandoned after UNC clinched. On Court 2, sophomore Benjamin Sigouin won his first set but lost the second in a tiebreaker. On Court 4, junior Josh Peck fell 6-1 in the first set but stormed back to win the second 6-4 and led 1-0 in the third. On Court 6, Soendergaard fell in the first set and was in a tiebreaker in the second when play was halted.
"I was happy with the way we competed in singles," said Paul, who also was pleased with his team's doubles play. "We had a couple of bad first sets but then we stepped it up. We'll learn some things from this match. It's a very good win for us."
The Tar Heels now turn their attention to Friday's match with the Eagles. Admission is free and the match is part of a doubleheader with the UNC women's tennis team, which hosts FSU at 1:45 p.m.
