
Trenchard Named ACC Defender Of The Year, Levy Coach Of The Year

GREENSBORO – North Carolina sophomore Emma Trenchard and head coach Jenny Levy were among five individuals from three nationally elite programs recognized as Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse season award winners for 2019.

Reigning Tewaaraton Award winner Sam Apuzzo of Boston College was the repeat selection as the ACC Attacker of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches. Her senior classmate, Dempsey Arsenault, was chosen as the ACC Midfielder of the Year.

Carolina, which claimed its fourth consecutive league title at last weekend's ACC Championship, saw sophomore Trenchard named ACC Defender of the Year, while Levy earned Coach of the Year honors. Syracuse defender Sarah Cooper was chosen the ACC Freshman of the Year.

Trenchard was a first-team All-ACC selection and will enter the NCAA Tournament having collected 22 ground balls while ranking second on her team in caused turnovers with 16 and winning six draw controls. A native of Windsor, Connecticut, Trenchard earned a spot on the ACC Championship All-Tournament team for her contributions to the Tar Heels' team title. Her efforts have helped UNC rank second in the ACC in fewest goals allowed per game (8.17).Â

Levy was voted the ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time after guiding the second-seeded Tar Heels to the ACC Championship title for the fourth consecutive year. UNC's four consecutive tournament championships (2016-19) stands as the second longest streak in conference history. The Tar Heels, who will take a 15-3 overall record into the NCAA Tournament, have won 41 of their last 45 games against ACC opponents, including 12 ACC Championship tournament wins in a row. Levy, in her 24th season, ranks first all-time among ACC women's lacrosse coaches in career wins with 322.

Apuzzo leads the nation with 78 goals and 104 points, and she has tallied three-game winning goals for the Eagles (19-1). The West Babylon, New York, native has been credited with 28 caused turnovers and has won a conference-leading 150 draws. Apuzzo was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year twice during the regular season. She has scored at least three goals in 15 of the Eagles' 20 games to date, and has scored at least one goal in each game this season.

Arsenault has picked up a Boston College team-high 36 ground balls this season while causing 14 turnovers. The senior from New Hampton, New Hampshire has totaled 80 points on 57 goals and 23 assists (second- and third-best on the team, respectively) while winning 84 draw controls. Her season stat line also includes three game-winning goals and a 52 percent conversion rate on free position attempts. Arsenault's regular-season honors includes the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week awards.

Syracuse's Cooper has lived up to her billing as one of the most highly regarded members of last year's women's lacrosse college recruiting class. The Lutherville, Maryland, freshman has helped the Orange to a 15-4 record while starting all 10 games. The only freshman on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List's contributions include 30 ground balls, 36 draw controls and. 30 caused turnovers. Cooper has twice recorded five caused turnovers in a game, which ties for fourth on Syracuse's single-game record list.
