May 13, 2019 | Men's Golf
Tar Heels Fourth After Opening 18 Holes
University of North Carolina freshman Dougie Ergood (Mount Laurel, N.J.) shot a season-best 4-under-66 and senior Joshua Martin (Pinehurst, N.C.) fired a 68 to lead the Tar Heels to an even-par 280 finish and fourth place after round one in the 2019 NCAA Stanford Regional.
The top five teams in the 13-team field after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark.
Carolina is six strokes behind Stanford, which had three players shoot 68 or better on its home course to lead the field after the opening 18 holes. UNCG is second at -5, Georgia Southern is third at -2, the Tar Heels are fourth at even par and South Florida and Ole Miss are tied for fifth at 2 over. Second-ranked Arizona State is seventh at 3 over.
Ergood is tied for second in the individual standings at 4 under. He shot 2 under on both sides and finished with an eagle, three birdies and only one bogey. His 66 is one shot better than his previous low round of his freshman season, a 67 in round one at the Old Town Club Collegiate in Winston-Salem in October.
Ergood's 66 is the best round by a Tar Heel in an NCAA regional since William Register shot a 66 at UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill in 2015.
Martin was the only player among the 75 in the field to play the Stanford Golf Course without a bogey in the round. He birdied the par-5 16th hole and the par-5 7th hole and had 16 pars, most in the field.
Martin's 68 is his third consecutive round in the 60s in NCAA regional play. Last year, in Kissimmee, Fla., he shot 69-67 over the final two rounds to help UNC advance to the NCAA Championship. Today's 68 was his third round in the 60s this year and the 16th in his career.
Burnett and Ergood were among three players to shoot 4 under on the par 5s. Carolina and South Florida led the field by playing the par 5s in 10 under par. The Tar Heels also led the 15 teams by playing the par 3s in even par.
Second-round play is Tuesday. The Tar Heels are paired with Ole Miss and South Florida with tee times beginning at Noon Eastern.

"Overall, it wasn't our best day but Josh and Dougie were huge for us today," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Josh managed his game well. He hit it good in spots and then also relied on his short game in spots.
"I was fortunate to have the opportunity to see Dougie play all day and the way he competed was phenomenal. Dougie's round showed what desire, heart and the mind can create. It was an exceptional lesson for him and really, for all of us."
